MSU email announcing Polk's firing

BECKLEY (WVVA) - Below is the email sent by the Mountain State University Board of Trustees to staff regarding the firing of the school's president, Dr. Charles Polk:

Dear Mountain State University Family,

Last night, the Mountain State University Board of Trustees terminated the employment contract of President Charles H. Polk, and he has been relieved of all duties effective immediately. The Board will release a formal statement and press release for the general public. However, we want to communicate directly to you - the Mountain State University family - to inform you of Dr. Polk's departure and of our commitment to you during this time of transition and into the future.

We anticipate appointing an interim president soon, and in the meantime, Dr. Jerry Ice, chair of the Board of Trustees will serve as acting president. We will also be implementing a plan and process for a national search for a permanent president as appropriate.

Most importantly for all of you, we do not anticipate any negative changes in the day-to-day operations of MSU. At the same time we are committed to ensuring the successful continuation of the academic year, we are also committed to working closely with faculty and staff to address accreditation issues raised by the West Virginia Board of Nursing and the Higher Learning Commission.

Dr. Ice will be in communication in the coming days and share regular updates with you and also ask for your input as we move forward. Contact information for Dr. Ice and the Trustees can be found below.

We are proud to be part of Mountain State University and want to express our appreciation to all of you during a difficult time. Together, we will work to ensure the future of this institution for generations of students to come.

With best regards,

Members of the MSU Board of Trustees
