Bland Co. woman faces mortgage fraud charges

ROCKY GAP (WVVA) - A local woman is facing more than 20 years in prison and more than $250,000 in fines for allegedly defrauding an area bank.

Janet Damewood, 61, of Rocky Gap has been indicted in West Virginia Federal Court on charges of mortgage fraud and obstruction of tax laws.

The charges are centered around a property owned by Damewood on Willow Oak Drive in Princeton.

A tax lien was placed on the property in 2005 because Damewood had unpaid taxes totaling $256,000.

Prosecutors say Damewood then applied for a mortgage on the property from Citi Financial in Princeton. As a result, she is accused of obtaining money by defrauding Citi by falsely representing the tax lien.

If convicted, Damewood face up to 23 years in prison, a $255,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and she'd have to pay restitution to Citi.
