WVU Tech football program discontinued

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The football program at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology is being eliminated.

Media outlets report that West Virginia University senior associate provost Russ Dean released a letter to the WVU Tech community Monday evening.

The letter came after the Legislative Oversight Commission on Higher Education Accountability endorsed a report for improvements at WVU Tech in Montgomery but wouldn't commit to funding them.

A study prepared by academic experts had sought a short-term cash infusion of up to $35 million and a long-term investment of as much as $100 million to ensure WVU Tech's survival.

Dean wrote that among the first steps will be eliminating Tech's football program. He says student scholarships and employee contracts will be honored.

Tech coach Scott Tinsley says he's surprised by the decision.
