9 area counties to get Boy Scouts' help

LEWISBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- Nine southern West Virginia counties stand to reap the benefits of some young elbow grease when the Boys Scouts of America holds its national jamboree in 2013.

The Register-Herald reports the 40,000 Scouts who are expected to come to the national Boy Scout adventure camp in Fayette County also will work for six hours on designated projects.

The counties are Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming.

Boy Scouts of America assistant manager of programs Dave Kopsa says the scouts will perform 300,000 hours of service on the projects over five days. The organization will have the final say on choosing the community projects. The Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia is serving as a clearinghouse.

Project applications are available at www.wvccc.com.
