Officials aim to prevent fires after WVU-LSU game

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Where there's no fuel, there's no fire.

Morgantown fire officials are trying to prevent the spectacle of nationally televised street fires Saturday night by ordering hundreds of people to remove furniture and other flammable material from their properties.

The Dominion Post says fire marshals posted nearly 700 notices Monday in problematic neighborhoods.

Residents have until 8 a.m. Thursday to comply or face fines of up to $1,000.

West Virginia faces Louisiana State in a prime time game airing live on ESPN.

Fire Chief Mark Caravasos says that sets the mood for revelry. But he warns that the eyes of the nation will be on Morgantown.

WVU students have a tradition of setting fires to celebrate athletic victories.

The city has been trying to end the practice for years.
