Spavital hired as WVU's QB coach

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Jake Spavital has been named West Virginia's quarterbacks coach just days before the start of fall practice.

Coach Dana Holgorsen announced Spavital's hiring Tuesday.

Spavital joined the football staff in January as an offensive graduate assistant coach. He worked with the quarterbacks during the spring.

He was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State last season when Holgorsen was the offensive coordinator. He also assisted Holgorsen at Houston before that.

Holgorsen was hired as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and head coach-in-waiting at WVU last December, then took over as head coach when Bill Stewart resigned in June.

The Mountaineers start practice on Friday.
