CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Democrat Nick Rahall has turned back a challenge that focused on whether he supported the coal industry or President Barack Obama's environmental policies.

Rahall won an 18th term in West Virginia's 3rd Congressional District over former Supreme Court justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard.

Maynard's campaign was heavily supported by the district's coal industry, including officials from Virginia based-Massey Energy. The company owns the Upper Big Branch mine, where 29 died in an explosion earlier this year.

Maynard tried to paint Rahall as being tied to policies promoted by Obama and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, seen as enemies of surface coal mining.

Rahall countered saying his record on coal was clear and he is proud to be a Democrat.
