Polls open across West Virginia and Virginia

(AP) -- The polls are open across both states for an election that has West Virginians picking congressional and state representatives, as well as an unexpired term on the state's highest court.  Virginians are picking their congressional representatives and voting on three proposed constitutional amendments.

Key races in West Virginia include the contest between Republican John Raese and Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin to replace the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd. The entire House of Delegates is up for election. So are nearly half of the Senate seats.

More than 108,200 West Virginia voters cast early ballots. That's the third-highest early voting turnout since it was introduced in 2002.

In Virginia, key races include the 5th District congressional contests, in which Democrat Tom Periello is trying to hold on to his seat against Republican challenger Robert Hurt.  In the 9th District, incumbent Democrat Rick Boucher is challenged by GOP candidate Morgan Griffith and Independent Jeremiah Heaton.

More than 135,000 Virginia voters had applied for absentee voting. Their ballots also are due to local registrars by 7 p.m.
