Bluefield, W.Va. (WVVA) – After serving nearly 42 years in law enforcement, former Bluefield, W.Va. Chief of Police and current Mercer County Sheriff candidate Charles Blizzard, finds himself on the other side of the law following his arrest Thursday morning.

Charles "Butch" Blizzard was arrested Thursday morning on two felony charges including unlawful malicious wounding, wanton endangerment, and a misdemeanor charge of making harassing phone calls.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly took place March 21 on Red Oak Ridge Road near Bluewell.

According to the criminal complaint, Blizzard approached the truck of William Keith Wilson and produced a silver revolver. The complaint goes on to say Blizzard cocked the gun and claimed he would kill Wilson. Blizzard then allegedly struck Wilson in the face with the handgun, cutting Wilson above the eye.

The misdemeanor charge involving harassing phone calls was produced after Blizzard reportedly left a voicemail message for Wilson's girlfriend following the alleged physical altercation. The transcripts of the message contain expletives, threats, and name calling.

Officers at the Princeton detachment of the West Virginia State Police made the arrest, and Blizzard was arraigned Thursday in front of Magistrate Marva Crouch out of Kanawha County and posted bond.

WVVA's Greg Carter spoke with Blizzard off camera before his arraignment. Blizzard claimed he did go to speak with Wilson about a domestic matter, but did not assault him.

When asked how the arrest would affect his campaign for sheriff, Blizzard said simply, "I don't know."

Blizzard served as the Bluefield, W.Va. Chief of Police from 1997-2006 but is more recently recognized as a running candidate for Mercer County Sheriff.
