Associated Press - June 15, 2009 7:03 PM ET SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana eye surgeon and his wife were found shot to death today, hours before they were scheduled to surrender to authorities on charges of performing unnecessary surgeries on patients and bilking health insurers.

Police say the bodies of Dr. Philip Gabriele and his wife, Marcella, were found inside his office in Elkhart by police investigating a possible suicide attempt.

A friend of the couple, told reporters she received a message on her voice mail from Philip Gabriele saying he and his wife "couldn't take the pain."

Last week's indictment alleged Dr. Gabriele falsely diagnosed cataracts and other disorders and performed unnecessary surgeries.

He was accused of fraudulently removing healthy eye lenses and replacing them with artificial lenses.

The indictment said that some of the surgeries were poorly done and caused poorer vision.
