Warrants for minor infractions and complaints may be backing up in Mercer County.

Sources tell WVVA news that just over 2000 warrants are now outstanding in Mercer County.

The Sheriff's Department could not comment on an exact number, but they did indicate that there was a large number of inactive warrants.

Most of those outstanding warrants are for misdemeanor crimes such as worthless checks, destruction of property, and trespassing.

Deputies say that a lack of a correct physical address or conflicting information can sometimes make it harder to locate individuals and serve warrants.

"With a lot of these cases you have one individual filing a charge on another and we have no investigative knowledge on that, of what address this person is located at, any background information, as opposed to a felony investigation or any other investigation even misdemeanors we would be investigating ourselves," says Captain A. D. Beasley of the Mercer County Sheriff's Department.

The Sheriff's Department also attempts to contact individuals by mail who have outstanding warrants for minor infractions.
