Bluefield, Va. (WVVA) – Traffic laws for Virginia drivers will change in just a couple of weeks, giving roadside workers some much needed space.
Lawmakers voted during the last session to expand the Commonwealth's "Move Over" law, which already mandated that drivers move away from police, fire, and rescue vehicles and personnel along the side of the road.
The updated law now offers the same protection to tow truck operators and highway workers.
Drivers are supposed to change lanes when possible when they notice emergency lights.
"The bottom line for vehicles, if you approach a red, blue or amber flashing light, move over if possible to give workers the room they need to do their job safely," urges AAA representative Martha Meade.
Virginia's new law is not uncommon, with 38 other states mandating the same safety practices from drivers. Virginia Department of Transportation employee Jeff Caldwell says despite the specifics of the law, most motorists oblige to all roadside workers by shifting lanes.
"This new law expands those protected by the 'Move Over' law, but in general what we're asking people to do is common sense," says Caldwell.
