W.Va. AG warns residents of potential census scams

Associated Press - February 24, 2010 6:25 AM ET

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Attorney General Darrell McGraw is warning residents to be wary of scams while the 2010 Census is being conducted.

McGraw says tricksters could try to use the census to obtain personal information.

He says authentic census forms don't ask for Social Security numbers, information about income or credit card information. The Census Bureau also doesn't use the Internet to solicit information.

Census takers have government badges marked with their name, a Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.

The census begins March 1.
