W.Va. state Sen. Bowman opts against re-election

Associated Press - January 21, 2010 5:55 PM ET

WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's state Senate will need a new Government Organization Committee chairman in 2011, following the incumbent's decision not to seek re-election.

Sen. Ed Bowman told The Intelligencer of Wheeling that he doesn't like being away from his family. The Hancock County Democrat added that otherwise, he's loved serving in the Legislature and is proud of his tenure there.

Bowman had been a two-term Weirton mayor, and before that served on the city's council, before winning his Senate seat in 1994.

The 63-year-old is on track toward becoming the longest serving senator to represent that district. Bowman manages the golf course at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in Chester.
