SUITLAND, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County police say a pregnant homeless woman was held at a Suitland apartment for five days, then her captor tried to cut the unborn baby from her body.
Police say 40-year-old Veronica Deramous, who told relatives and her boyfriend that she was pregnant though she was not, promised the woman baby clothes. But once they were at Deramous' apartment last week, police say Deramous attacked and bound her.
Days later, police say the 29-year-old woman escaped after Deramous tried to cut the unborn baby from her body.
Veronica Deramous was arrested Sunday in Arlington County and is charged with attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment and related counts.
Police say the woman is expected to recover. Her daughter was delivered by emergency Cesarean section and named Miracle.
