Bluefield (WVVA) – One victim from the Sophia fire has been flown to a burn treatment center after suffering major burns in the incident.
Store owner Rowan Cook was taken to a local hospital after suffering burns from the fire in Sophia on Main Street, and was then flown to a severe burn treatment center in Pittsburgh.
Firefighters from Sophia City, Lester, and Coal City remain on the scene of a fire in Sophia that began just after 9:30 a.m. this morning.
According to Chief Jeff Pittman of the Sophia City Fire Department, a malfunction in a pot belly stove caused the initial burst of flames, destroying nearly half the building.
Emergency crews worked feverishly to extinguish the fire as there was a great risk of explosion with oxygen tanks, car fuels, and flammable liquids stored in the burning building.
WVVA News at 6 will have in depth interviews with neighbors who witnessed the fire and Fire Chief Pittman.
