Flood awareness week has officially kicked off in the mountain state, and while the number of deaths from floods has decreased dramatically over the past 20 years, they still pose a serious threat.
According to the National Weather Service, from 1940 until 1996, there were just over 43,000 severe weather related deaths in the United States.
Of those, 7,037 deaths were flood related. That's roughly 16% of the total severe weather deaths during that time period.
However, many flooding deaths are very preventable, so be sure to join us all this week as we bring you more tips on flood safety.
