UPDATE: 2 students injured in altercation at Mount View High

WELCH (WVVA) - Two students were hospitalized Wednesday evening following an altercation at Mount View High School in which one was stabbed with a pocket knife.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of the school Wednesday afternoon. Both students were taken to Welch Community Hospital following the fight -- one with at least one stab wound. Both were in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries and were expected to be released overnight.

Police are not saying what started the fight or the names of the subjects involved. Charges are pending.

McDowell County Schools Superintendent Jim Brown confirmed to WVVA a 'physical altercation' occurred between two students, but did not disclose any further details, citing confidentiality.

Students at the high school and nearby middle school were placed on lockdown following the incident, delaying their dismissal.

Brown commended the staff at the school and responding law enforcement officials for their handling of the situation.

WVVA will have further information as this story develops.
