Woman may face federal charges for stealing checks

Posted:

Bluefield (WVVA) - A Raleigh County woman may face over 60 years of jail time and federal charges for stealing mail from both mailboxes and area post offices.

Amanda McKinney has confessed to removing checks from personal mailboxes and post office drop off points. She then altered and spent the checks under her name.

The 25-year-old Ghent native faces charges from both the Beckley police and Raleigh County Sheriff's Departments, and federal charges may be pending once United State Postal Inspectors get involved.

Authorities encourage anyone mailing checks to use post office drop boxes instead of personal mail boxes, and to make sure the envelope is properly dropped down into the receptacle.
